In contrast to Balat, Sultanahmet is dominated by huge historic palaces and mosques. I was drawn to the interiors—the ornate tilework and geometric domes of the mosques, the intimate turquoise-tiled harem chambers, the sweeping courtyards of Topkapi Palace. The palace deserved more time than I could give it, but this series captures the layers of Ottoman ornament and how space encodes purpose and power.
