Midway Geyser Basin first. The boardwalk keeps you a few feet above ground that would burn through a boot sole, curling past bacterial mats in orange and rust toward the turquoise eye at the centre of Grand Prismatic Spring, sulphur thick in the air the whole way round. From the overlook trail above, the whole thing reads as a target - rings of colour running out from a blue so saturated it looks dyed.
Below the overlook the ground keeps its own record. Lodgepole pines die standing where mineral water reaches their roots, bleached to bone and left upright for years - a whole forest of them out on the flats, silvered and leafless against the treeline behind.

Old Faithful erupted on schedule, the same sulphur smell drifting over a much bigger crowd than the basin had - benches full, a ranger keeping time on a clipboard.
It went up as promised, a few minutes of steady spray against a flat blue sky, gone before most of the crowd had their phones down.
