Nobody told me the Basque Country was green. The mountains are densely forested, the humidity is high, and in July the hillsides look more like Wales than anything you'd expect from Spain. Bilbao sits in a valley between those mountains and the Atlantic, which means the light is diffuse and the air is heavy and the city has been shaped by a set of pressures that feel specific to exactly here.
The Old Town is built on a medieval grid, the Casco Viejo. Narrow cobbled streets, ornate ironwork balconies, stone buildings running to four and five storeys. The Plaza Nueva colonnade casts long diagonal shadows in the morning. An iron street lamp in a sunlit alley, a bar terrace glimpsed ahead through the archway. On a corner in the early morning, a tiled mosaic figure covers an entire building face, people visible at a bar further down the alley, the city already going about its business.
The graffiti is everywhere and total. Graffiti-tagged shutters below ornate balconies. Graffiti-covered rusted corrugated hoarding beside a stone arch. A dark alley where political posters paper the far end. Graffiti on the outdoor staircase at every bar venue. The Casco Viejo doesn't hide any of this — the heritage and the tags occupy exactly the same walls.

Bilbao — July 2025
The Guggenheim is thirty minutes from the old town by foot. Richard Serra's Corten steel spirals fill an entire gallery — walls of rust-coloured steel curving from floor to ceiling, people small inside them. Louise Bourgeois's Maman stands outside, the spider's legs casting shadows on the titanium cladding. The building's limestone and titanium roofline rises against a grey sky.
Down at the Nervión in the evening: three rowing boats moored together, red-trimmed white, green-interior white, and dark green. The tide at low water exposes a muddy slipway with small boats stranded on it. The Puente de Vizcaya transporter bridge carries its gondola across the estuary, colourful apartment buildings behind it. Out at the beach: two boys playing volleyball in front of port cranes across the bay.
