JANUARY 2025 · ROAM
After dark
Bristol, England
January night walk in Bristol with a 50mm Pentacon and a willingness to hold the shutter open. Long exposures on a vintage lens — not a technical combination, just the camera I had and time to burn.

The MetroBus bridge over the Avon New Cut, lit from below, long-exposure light trails from vehicles crossing it drawn into continuous streams. The bridge doesn't need interpretation. It's the bridge. The light trails are evidence of traffic you didn't see.
The trails are precise — you can read the curve of the road from them.

Further toward the harbour: the M Shed at Wapping Wharf, lit in blue and amber, the building reading as solid and quiet while moving vehicles left ghost trails in the foreground. A bus captured mid-route on a night street, the exposure long enough to blur it almost into erasure — you see the shape of it, headlights and taillights, the bus itself becoming light.

The harbour at night. The cathedral's tower and the dock cranes in the same frame, the building lit in golden tones, the cranes dark against the sky. Another frame: amber and red lighting, the water flat, the whole scene going golden.

Night street: moving vehicle light trails and industrial dock infrastructure in the background. The trails are precise — you can read the curve of the road from them.
The Pentacon at these exposures renders the artificial light warmly. The city becomes less specific. What comes back is warmth and the shape of movement.
