White hart
South Gloucestershire, England
One frame. A white hart in profile against a black background.
I was working on isolation — what happens when you remove habitat entirely and leave only the subject. No context, no location, no environmental information. Just the animal and the void around it.
The hart is pale, almost luminous against the dark. The coat catches light along the spine and shoulder. It's standing still — not posed, not spooked, just present in the frame in profile. You see the whole animal, side-on, nothing competing for attention.
The image has been in my collection for over a year. I kept coming back to it without knowing quite what to do with it. It was always complete. It just needed acknowledging on its own terms rather than as part of something else.
That clarity — the stripped-down confrontation with a single subject, the darkness doing the work context usually does — is what the image is about. Or what I think it's about. The hart doesn't know there's a void.
