Newport

Newport, Pembrokeshire

A new manual lens needs teaching. I brought it to Newport on the Pembrokeshire coast in September — a drizzly day on the Nevern Estuary, grey sky, still water, moored boats. The conditions were deliberate. Reflections would show me how the glass rendered detail and colour. Edge cases would show me the distortion.

Headland above the Nevern Estuary

Three fishing boats moored in still grey water under overcast sky. The calm estuary holds the image without drama. A blue-hulled fishing boat with cream cabin reflected in mirror-still water, moored alone — the reflection cleaner than the sky. Multiple small boats scattered across exposed mudflats at low tide, the Preseli Hills beyond. A single moored boat, grey-toned, the hills distant and soft.

The drizzle is in all of it: the grey quality of the water, the soft edges on the hills, the way the cottages sit slightly dampened.

The vivid pink cottage with slate roof and brick chimney surrounded by low stone walls is the lens test. That pink reads differently at the margins of the frame. The white stone house with dark slate roof perched on a rocky waterside headland, the weathered stone walls: that's the edge behaviour on pale tones. A weathered white stone cottage with a red painted door and small windows, an overgrown wild garden around it.

Two figures on a wooden bench overlooking the estuary with moored boats and rolling hills — they're not subjects, they're scale. The drizzle is in all of it: the grey quality of the water, the soft edges on the hills, the way the cottages sit slightly dampened.

I missed focus a few times. The lens was teaching. By the end of the afternoon, the quirks at the margins were starting to make sense.
