Vietnam - Sa Pa Hilltribe huts and houses
Muong Hoa Valley, Vietnam
The H'mong and Red Dao villages in the Muong Hoa Valley are built from what's available and built for altitude. Timber frames. Corrugated iron roofs, dark with damp. Fencing made from whatever's at hand. Steep slopes mean the structures sit at angles to the terrain, braced and buttressed differently on each side.

Walking through the mist between them: a weathered wooden H'mong hut with a metal roof and fencing, set on the mountainside with the valley invisible behind. A simple wooden structure with a corrugated metal roof and the hills barely visible through the fog above. These aren't picturesque — they're functional in the way that things built for survival and maintained across generations are functional.
The settlements are integrated with the terrain so completely that in dense fog they appear and disappear with the visibility.
Sa Pa villages — May 2023

The details accumulate. A metal water tank beside a wooden hut, a dark pig foraging in the yard nearby, a juniper tree at the corner. Chickens in a dirt yard with wooden buildings behind them. Multiple small huts with corrugated iron roofs and chickens grazing between them. The livestock are free-ranging but contained by the layout of the settlement.

Two women in traditional dress sitting by a timber-framed hut with bamboo poles. A woman carrying a basket, walking in front of a wooden hut with the misty valley behind her. A figure standing in the foreground on a mountain path with a hut in the mist beyond.

From a distance: terraced hillside with scattered wooden huts among lush green forest and mountain mist. Small huts in an expansive valley landscape with farmland. Mountain valley with wooden huts, a dark water pond, pine forest and misty peaks behind. The settlements are integrated with the terrain so completely that in dense fog they appear and disappear with the visibility.
