Vietnam - Sa Pa mountain trek: Day two
Hoàng Liên Sơn Mountains, Vietnam
On the second morning the fog began to lift and the mountains became real. What had been hypothetical all of day one — the scale of the valleys, the terracing, the distance — started to resolve into actual geography.

Terraced rice fields stepped down the slopes in reddish and green patches, the mountains disappearing into thick fog above them, the fog now overhead rather than surrounding. May Kim in a conical hat on the hillside, looking out over the tiered agricultural fields. The view from a log railing on a mountain overlook: forested valley and layers of distant peaks.
The blue sky appeared in the afternoon.

The streams were terracotta-coloured from the red soil — orange-brown water moving through green agricultural landscape, the mountains clearing ahead. We waded one of them. A trekker crossing through muddy water in morning mist, forested ridges visible. May Kim in green waders, the valley behind her.

At the homestay: light streaming through wooden slats into a room with a fire pit, belongings around it. Two people framed in shadows on the porch with the mountain view beyond dark wooden beams. Inside and outside compressed in the same frame.

Two buffalo on a misty mountain pasture, the fog and lush vegetation behind them. May Kim and one of the trekkers resting on wooden logs in the valley, the landscape open around them. A figure in soft focus working in a muddy rice field, small buildings in the village behind.
The blue sky appeared in the afternoon. It was above the foreground vegetation on the mountain slope, the peaks clear for the first time.
